British National Championships 2006

lunes, 20 de noviembre de 2006 8:38

Very well done to all concerned Organisers, Competitors and Adjudicators.

Only result I would reverse is 3rd and 4th in Pro Latin.  As always that is just my opinion.

Good to see Paul Richardson compete in these championships again.  What  a shame they did not dance for England as second latin couple in the Team Match at Blackpool in May.

What a huge shame that European Professional Standard Championships were allowed to clash with the long published dates of the British Nationals.  The WDC should not have allowed this  which prevented top two English Couples from participating in "European".

As  always at "Blackpool" there were many people unhappy at the number of couples in the early round heats.

Polkadancer

I agree that there were far too many couples in the early round heats.

I was a little surprised people were still complaining about the numbers n the heats

20/21/22 couples in a heat is part ofthe "history" of Blackpool.

Competitors and parents should expect it and be prepared

The May Festival would be three weeks long if they only had 12 or 14 coupls per heat  :-)

For some this would still be too many.

Divide the length of one heat by 20+ couples ...Does this gives time enough for a judge to look at individual couples and make a comparison ?

In this sort of  "early crowded rounds" comp, the judges mark you because they know you...or take it that way...make sure they know you before you go.

Each year there are always very similar comments.

A very experienced Adjudicator who has judged Blackpool many times told me

"The biggest nightmare in the early rounds is not to find the good couples to mark as they stand out it is trying to be fair to the least bad of the rest".

I always think of those words when I sit and spectate for the 2 minutes of each dance and more and more it becomes clear what was meant..  Some couples you do not need to give those 5 or 6 (average) seconds and so you can give more to the others.  Sometimes in two seconds you can see that you cannot mark that couple and so you have a little more tme for the others.

What always amazes me is the length of time that some couples just stand bending knees, lifting arms and moving from one foot to the other etc.  All this is dance time lost and less opportunity to impress with dance ability.

At the "Open" in May there are hundreds of couples whom the judges have never seen in their lives

and these couples manage to get marked and progress.

I apologise to any person that this may offend as I am not trying to be superior clever or controversial I simply state a judges view and I have observed..

I agree with most of what you say ,the Nationals however had around 58 competitiors in the Amateur Latin(according to the programme) as opposed to a few hundred at Blackpool in May .The first round was so crowded on that floor that it not only made it difficult for the competitors to dance to the best of thier ability it also made it difficult for the judges to do thier job. I agree with the results of the semi and also the final but I was suprised to see some couples go out in the first rounds that one would have thought would have maybe made the 24! This may have been that they didnt dance thier best,(due to floor crowding or  any other reason) or it could have been that they simply werent seen . Either way I do think that in a competition such as May Blackpool so many on the floor is to be expected because of the huge entry, in the case of the Nationals it may have been better to slip in another heat . As a keen fan of latin and ballroom dancing I beleive it would have also made it even more enjoyable for the spectators. Even with the crowded floor it was a great competition.
