Spreading germs ?

domingo, 02 de marzo de 2008 18:06

Has anyone suffered of respiratory problems during and after the recent La Classique and Ontario Closed  ?

In 2007 a large number of competitors became very ill with flue like symptoms after La Classique.  This year again many competitors got sick, many  complained about respiratory problems during and immediately after the event.

Is it because sick, contageous dancers show up determined to compete  no matter what, and regardless whom they may infect,  or,  is it air quality problem, or both ?

Question:

Shouldn't ill dancers (or ill dance teachers ) stay away & wait till they are free  of germs/viruses , or does their participation show how brave, committed  and determined to dance they are  ?

Hi Sunshine,

Im very sorry to hear of this problem. Personally I think that anyone with a chest infection , flu like symptoms etc should not participate in a competition . This is not only for their own well being, but also for the safety of the other competitors, judges and audience.

If an asthmatic person contracts a chest infection etc they can become very ill indeed, this also applies to the elderly and the very young.

Although some may say that it is brave to participate in a competition irrelevant of illnesss, I belive that it is braver and wiser to withdraw.

Whether or not the problems at the above mentioned competitions are caused by air quality or the passing on of infection I have no idea. I would think it would be very difficult to prove either theory.

I am not an expert on medicine, but know of at least three persons who had problems, and needed to use puffers.

The air during Ontario Closed is always wery dry in the hall but that should not cause illness.  many dancers get sick  during LaClassique, I suppose they recycle stale  air and all 'bugs'  that sick people expell into air. I know of dancers who competed having high feaver, and were quite proud that they managed complete all  5 dances.

I agree with you  that it takes a brave person to ( show respect to the rest of the people ) stay home and not spread diseases.  This goes especially for the teachers  who must partner their single pupils, some of whom are quite old a fragile in health to start.

Suffering of asthma myself I was warned of places that  are carpeted.

If the halls are carpeted,  and when moist,  such as when rain and snow is brought inside,  mold sets in and spores of mold grow become airborn when hall becomes busy due to activity such as dance competition.

In winter time the relative humidity of the indoor air is very low, unless air is conditioned using humidifiers.  Not likely case in old halls, where the already dry cold outside air is heated and becoming even drier.

Even healthy dancers would notice their lips stick to their teeth, tongues and throats  become very dry   and asthmatics  would need use their inhalers, and people with allergies msut take  antihistamines.

The carpets may appear clean but they are saturated with mold and spores.

The best place is tiled, with bare floors,  which can be wiped with desinfectants biocides, and fungicides.

If you have such an experience, inform the Hall owners, it is to their best interest to keep their customers happy.

Bacteria and Viruses distribution is another story. Sick should  stay home and far away from other people.

I have terrible allergies which cause asthma and you are right...carpets and wet areas flare it up. I try to stay away from areas like that as much as possible. If I don't know what a place might be like I make sure I'm prepared with meds and an inhaler.

Careful inDanskin,  inhaler may be banned  by IDSF,  so if these competitions were under IDSF rules, you could be breaking the Rules subject to penalties including loss of World title, or was it Ontario Closed title  !

It is so hard to find a decent place to organize competitions, and as they say, beggars cannot be choosers......so make sure you have emergency staff standing- -by when dancing under such conditions..or try find allargens/ mold  free place.

( I hate getting infected  from  teachers who teach while sick,  but they too much catch the illness from someone,  so who came first,  sick teacher or a sick student ? )

Missing the Ontario Closed due to illness could result in missing the CCC, and I don't think anyone would want to do that. A little cold definately didn't stop some juniors from competing in both La Classique and Ontario Closed. Nor did a fever for the Falls Premier Ball.
